Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father's departure the family, it was taken care of by her mom, grandmother and godparents. When she was a young girl, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to word associations. Ford was interested in the acting profession during her teenage years and she was a part of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized Sylvia Young Theatre School was not the right place suitable for her. Ford decided to apply to Central School of Speech and Drama and getting a spot on her third attempt she applied for and was awarded acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. Shaun Dingwall was one of Ford's classmates. He went on to get frequent roles on the show as Pete Tyler and Doctor Who. Ford didn't finish her studies until 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first appearance on TV on the show Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programs like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly, and London's Burning during the Nineties. She also worked regularly in the theatre, eventually being a part of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate received recognition for her stand-up comedy and became part of her portfolio in 1996.
